The Winter/Spring 2010 session runs from February 6 to April 30, 2010, with a culminating exhibit on May 8, 2010.

Our programs are free for low-income families, who recieve priority in our programs. We do our best to accomodate other families living in Venice; however, as our space and resources are limited, we cannot guarantee a spot. Thanks for understanding! If you think you qualify for free programs, you will be asked to bring documentation of total family income. This information is kept completely confidential and never leaves your child's file at Venice Arts. When you call to make your appointment, we will tell you what documentation you will need to bring.

TUESDAY
My Life as a Movie
3:30–5:30 | Ages 10-12 | Beg. & Interm. | VDC
Learn or reinforce the basics of filmmaking using digital video, while creating a series of short movies about your life that you will write, direct, shoot, and edit.
Filmmaking in Action: Local Stories (AS)
4–6pm | Ages 13 & up | Interm. | VAG
Work on individual and collaborative projects to tell local community stories, while advancing to the next level of video production and learning to compose soundtracks using Garageband.
Darkroom Lab (For students in black & white photo) (AS)
4–6pm | Location: VAG
WEDNESDAY

Learn or reinforce the basics of filmmaking using digital video while creating a series of short movies about your life that you will write, direct, shoot, and edit.
Document This! Photography & Writing
4–6pm | Ages 13 & up | Beg. to Interm. | VAG
Working on a group documentary project, develop your skills in photography using digital SLR cameras, image editing, and printing in the “digital darkroom”. Learn how writing (prose, poetry, expository) can be integrated into your work.

Digital ‘Zine
3:30-5;30pm | Ages 10-12 | Level: Beg. | Location: VDC
Experiment with animation, photography, collage, video and creative writing to produce digital 'zines.
Advanced Studies Photography: Portfolios and Projects (AS)
4–6pm | Ages 14 & up | Adv’d | VAG | Pre-req: Permission of Lead
Review your work, identify how to build your portfolio, and develop new work through individual and group projects that will challenge you creatively. Develop your art presentation skills, including bookmaking and multimedia. Those needing film or digital darkroom time can schedule an additional lab time during the week.
SATURDAY
Art Discovery 1 (ages 6-7) and Art Discovery 2 (ages 8-9)
10-11:30am | Level: Beg. & Interm. | Location: VDC
(Ages 6-7) Fables, Legends and Heroes
In this multi-disciplinary class, children are introduced to color, texture, form drawing with charcoal, watercolor wet-on-wet painting, beeswax/clay modeling, 3-D construction, collages and murals to tell the stories of transformation and change in the world around them- the very basic foundation of narrative.
(Ages 8-9) Legends and Culture
Students examine the environment around them, studying buildings and shelters. Final multi-workshop structure building project will tell the story of a culture locally or from around the world while learning about form drawing, contrast (light and shadow), architecture and 3D structure building.
Comics
10am-12pm | Ages 10-12 | Level: Beg. & Interm. | Location: VDC
Develop an understanding of how to develop stories through the medium of comics, including building skills in writing, illustration, and sequencing. Great preparation for taking classes in animation or film.
Digital Animation
1-3pm | Ages 13 & up | Level: Beg. & Interm. | Location: VDC
New students learn the fundamentals of storytelling through digital animation, while continuing students expand existing writing, illustration, and animation skills to create movies using Flash software.
Document This! Photography & Writing
10am-12pm | Ages 10-12 | Level: Beg. & Interm. | Location: VAG
Develop skills in shooting, composition, and storytelling, while working toward the creation of a group series. Learn to edit your images in the “digital darkroom” and create final work for print and online exhibits.
Black & White Photography (AS)
1-3pm | Ages 13 & up | Level: Intermediate | Pre-requisites: 1 year of photography or permission of Lead Instructor | Location: VAG
Expand photographic skills and knowledge through shooting with black & white film. Learn how to process film, create darkroom prints, and scan your negatives for digital imaging and printing. Enrollment in either the Tuesday or Wednesday darkroom (above) is required.
Special Workshop: Youth Media Crew (AS)
12-3pm | Ages 14 & up | Level: Advanced | Pre-Requisites: Permission of Lead Mentor | Location: VAG
The Youth Media Crew involves youth photographers and filmmakers in researching, gathering, and producing several projects for What's Your Story. They will also help administer the project website. Youth completing the 9-month project will receive a stipend. Note: It is anticipated that youth will sometimes need to devote additional time, beyond the 3-hour weekly meeting, to shooting or editing their projects.
