OVERVIEW
Advanced Studies
(AS) targets each cycle, a small group (5 to 8) of talented, motivated youth who have been involved
at Venice Arts for a number of years and have developed the mix
of creative and technical skills and knowledge necessary to begin to work
semi-independently on mentor-designed and self-initiated projects. Most Advanced Studies students work on filling gaps in knowledge and skill, expanding their ability to take an idea from concept through execution, and on creating a portfolio
(print and/or digital) in preparation for advanced learning or work.
COMPONENTS OF ADVANCED STUDIES
Workshops: Students work in small groups with their peers and mentors on individual projects. Workshops include ample opportunity for work creation, use of the darkroom and/or digital labs, peer-to-peer, mentor-to student feedback and 1:1 mentoring.
Exhibition: Each year, Advanced Studies students curate and mount their own exhibit at the Venice Arts Gallery.
Youth Art Internships: Advanced Studies students have the opportunity to become paid Youth Art Interns at Venice Arts, where they develop sophisticated on-the-job experience as peer artist-mentors, gallery assistants, and digital lab/darkroom assistants.
Media District Internships: Advanced Studies students have the opportunity to be placed as Youth Art Interns in creative production and post-production businesses affiliated with the Venice Media District.
Special Projects & Independent Learning: Advanced Studies students are selected to work on special projects, such as Photo Opps, and to make complete use of Venice Arts' equipment and labs outside of class time.
